Creating Dynamic and Bold Illustrations for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden
The Process
The Task:
The Brooklyn Botanic Garden asked me to create branded two pieces of artwork to promote For the Birds, a garden-wide exhibition all about birds local to Brooklyn and how they interact with the gardens. The exhibition combined music and art to teach the public about birds.
The artwork had to include bird species that are highlighted in the exhibition, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden logo and branding, captivating colors. One of the pieces must tell the public that the event includes a musical element! One piece needed to be vertical, and one needed to be horizontal. They also asked for a suite of spot illustrations to add to existing branding materials like brochures and web pages.
My Solution:
I came up with a two-pronged approach:
One piece will highlight a handful of the birds featured in the exhibition, and will position them front and center with a laser focus and vibrant colors and strong personalities that draw the view in and make sure they know what this event is all about…BIRDS!
The second piece will play with the vertical shape of the banner by including a guitar, flowers, and birds to highlight the musical aspect.
Both pieces will be slightly retro, inspired by Woodstock posters of birds and guitars, but with my unique style and new, modern colors to capture a lot of attention.
I provided sketches for three different concepts, and we landed on two directions, one for vertical, and one for horizontal. The spot illustrations were created to complement the colors of the main art.
